IA: What is the shop you work at? Are you an owner or an employee?
PC: I own and work at LUCKY BIRD TATTOO. An all custom shop & gallery.
IA: How long has Lucky Bird been open?
PC: I have been open for about 2 years and many more to come!
IA: How long have you been tattooing?
PC: I have been tattooing for 6 years now, and have been dedicating myself to all custom work for the last 3 years or so.
IA: Where do you live?
PC: I have made Annapolis, Maryland my home but Bangkok will always be a second home to me.
IA: Where are you from?
PC: I have lived all over as a kid, places like Texas, New Jersey and back and forth from Maryland and Bangkok
IA: What interested you to start tattooing?
PC: I had never thought about being a tattoo artist before! I always worked two jobs at restaurants and happen to be getting tattooed a lot at the time and the place I was getting tattooed needed a shop helper to clean and whatnot so I started working there at nights. After about a year and a half of working there I started really appreciating what the tattooers did, which sparked my interest in drawing again. One thing lead to another after that…
IA: Have you always been artistic? If so, what is your favorite artistic outlet (ex. oil/painting, drawing, sculpting..)
PC: I drew as a kid but to be honest never took drawing anymore serious then a fun hobby when I was bored. I was more into skateboarding and playing music, but I think I had a little bit of the artist ability hiding somewhere in me. But once I decided to try to get into tattooing I have taken drawing very serious and haven’t stopped pushing myself since.
IA: What would you say is your tattooing “style”?
PC: I do a custom animated/ cartoon/ caricature style. People refer to my style in the tattoo world as “new school” but I just like to animate people/characters and put my twist to a subject.
IA: Where do you find your inspiration?
PC: I have a lot of great customers who give me a lot of freedom with their ideas so that allows me to really have fun with the piece. I am lucky enough to be around a lot of good friends who are great artist. Seeing what they come up with is inspiring, even if it is something totally different from what I do. I have some very talented artist at my shop, Rodd Diaz & Tyler McKinney, we critique and push each other’s work. I also have a very awesome, fun son! He inspires me in so many ways, whether just to do better in life, seeing him act all crazy or just sitting with him watching cartoons.
IA: What is the story behind the Zombie shirt featured on InkAddict.com?
PC: Well, fortunately the guys from InkAddict had saw me a convention in Cincinnati and contacted me to do a shirt for them. I happened to have the zombie design already designed and figured I would run that first to see how it worked out. They printed it with great quality and didn’t compromise my design at all. After expressing my happiness, they happened to take me on as one of their sponsored artist!
IA: Do you have future ideas of new shirt designs for us?
PC: I do plan on designing a new shirt in the new future. I have a few ideas in mind, so keep an eye out for those!
IA: Are you married?
PC: Yes, I have a beautiful, supporting wife!
IA: Kids?
PC: Yes, I have a little boy who is almost 3 years old. We plan to have one more child. my son is my biggest accomplishment of my life!
IA. Will you be attending any upcoming tattoo conventions/events soon?
PC: I will be at the, TEXAS TATTOO ROUND UP, Sept. 16-18th 2011 in Dallas, TX. Two days after that I will be going back to Thailand to see my family, but when I get back from there I will be doing a guest spot at my friend Tim Pangburn’s shop Art Machine Productions Oct. 24-25th in Philly. TattooLaPalooza, Jan. 6-8th in Miami, FL. Philadelphia Convention, Feb. 10-12th 2012. These are all of the ones that are set in stone as of now. Check out my website www.luckybirdtattoo.com for more travel updates.
IA: What do you enjoy doing outside of your professional life?
PC: Tattooing, drawing and owning a shop consumes a big part of my life but any time away from that I spend with my wife and son! I live a pretty normal life, I enjoy being a husband and father.
IA: Have there been any awards and/or magazine appearances you have attained throughout your time in the tattoo industry?
PC: Yes, I am honored and proud to be an award winning artist and to have had interviews and my work published in some of the leading magazines in the tattoo industry.
IA: What would you say is the key to your previous and continued success?
PC: I think my biggest key is that I keep striving to be a better artist as well as a tattoo artist. I try to be my biggest critic and to keep pushing my art and I try not to let my ego get in the way of constructive criticism. I feel like as soon as you think you are as good as you can get, you stop growing and your art will get stagnant.
IA: Tattoo equipment preference?
PC: I am proudly sponsored by Eternal Ink and exclusively use, Eternal Ink. As far as machines, as of now I am using a coil Liner made by Gus and a Swash Drive for shading.
IA: Where can the people go to find you?
PC: Find me on facebook, twitter or check out www.luckybirdtattoo.com to set up an appointment and to keep up with my work and travels.
