Detroit’s own Against the Grain is known for being one of the fastest, most rockin’ bands in Detroit. The band sites bands like Motörhead, Zeke, Turbonegro and Nashville Pussy as some of their influences, all of which you can hear traces of in their music. They hit the scene back in ‘09 and since have released 4 albums and played countless dates across the US and Canada. Their latest album Road Warriors was released this past July on Self Destructo Records, and the band followed up the release by touring with The Atomic Bitchwax and Mos Generator.

If you’ve ever seen ATG live, either in Detroit or in your city, you may have noticed a few things. First, they put on a hell of a show. Second, they play faster than pretty much any band you have ever seen before. And finally, you’ve probably noticed that guitarist Kyle Davis has a tattoo or two, the guy rarely (if ever) wears a shirt while on stage. Since Against the Grain just returned to the Motor City from touring, we wanted to catch up with Davis about the band, touring, and his tattoos.
Against the Grain
Kyle Davis is one of the men behind the microphone and on guitar in Against the Grain. In addition to playing with ATG, he also is the front man for a side project called RawDogs and plays guitar for Her Dark Host. When asked how he manages to balance being in so many bands, touring, and just life in general, he responded by saying, “It's difficult to juggle being in multiple bands and tour 5 months a year while still trying to uphold a "normal" life. The trick is to create your own definition of "normal" and just keep at it until you're satisfied. I'd rather be a broke musician than a cashier at Rite Aid any day.” It definitely isn’t a life everyone can pull off, but Davis and the guys in ATG seem to be doin’ a pretty good job at it. In 2015 alone, the band has played over 60 shows, and that’s with them slowing things down a bit. In the past, they played over 150 shows a year. While talking about touring, Davis explained, “The best part about being on the road so much is that I don't feel trapped because I know I’ll be gone soon enough.”

With so much time spent on the road, this has given Davis an opportunity not only to check out a ton of cities, but also get ink in some of those cities. The latest piece he got while on the road was done by Casey Sass at True Blue Tattoo (Austin, TX). In the Detroit area, he has had work done by quite a few artists, including Adam Nagy at B’z Ink and Bre Alex at Vicious Ink. Right now Kyle doesn’t have any new pieces planned, but wants to work on his back next and then more of his legs.

Just as Davis doesn’t have any new ink planned right now, ATG doesn’t have any tour dates currently on the books. However, they’re confident that they will hit the road again before the end of the year. Meanwhile Kyle has some shows lined up with his other projects, including November 10th when he will play in Her Dark Host alongside Castle at Corktown Tavern in Detroit.
