Emmanuel Mendoza is an painter and tattoo artist hailing from the Ironclad Tattoo Co. shop in Troy, MI, who will be contributing to InkAddict's Leave Your Mark wall at this year's Chill On The Hill event, September 30, 2016, presented by 89x.
InkAddict decided to catch up with him before the Chill On The Hill event to get to know him as an artist, and find out more about his work.
Mendoza specializes in Neo-Traditional with a focus on Illustration (but can and does every type requested). He is inspired by photographs of animals or nature as well as other artists and illustrators. John James Audubon is an artist who Mendoza cites, who was a historical ornithologist, naturalist, and painter that documented many types of birds. Along with this, he is constantly looking at the nature in the world around him, and Emmanuel admits that he "stopped looking at tattoo references a long time ago" and pulls from what he sees in day to day life.
Emmanuel has been drawing and painting "as long as he can remember," and has been tattooing professionally for 7 years. Though Mendoza enjoys doing black and grey work when it comes to tattooing, he prefers doing color work, as well as painting, both on canvas and "graffiti style." Mendoza also sells prints of his work on his website.
In addition, Emmanuel has also designed a few shirts for InkAddict, with one that was just released. When he created the set of designs for the InkAddict shirts, he said that he saw an "eccentric woman" in his mind, and agreed that the mystery of the fact you can't see her face (which in the first, is covered by birds [Pictured left, on Emmanuel], the second, covered by moths [pictured right]) makes you want to know more about the woman in the design because you cannot see her whole face.
Mendoza will be contributing to the InkAddict Leave Your Mark wall with a design of a skull, in which he is excited to paint large scale. He began sketching the idea and can't wait to get started, as he loves to create large scale artwork, which he doesn't always get to do - especially in a graffiti and paint-type setting.
