Tattooed Historical Figures: Theodore Roosevelt

Tattooed Historical Figures: Theodore Roosevelt

March 13, 2017

Though for years, the location and nature of Roosevelt's tattoo(s) could only be speculated, it is now known that his family crest was tattooed across his chest. No photos of such a tattoo ever reached the light of day (and with the conservative apprehension of the time towards tattoos, it can be understood why), but it would have also been much easier at such a time to keep a tattoo on one's chest hidden from prying eyes, at least in photographs.

Roosevelt was not known as a man of timidity or as one to dwell on the criticisms of others though, so it can be assumed that he would have thought little of the ill constructed opinions of tattoos that many may have at the time. In fact, it would instead seem that he would have the utmost respect for those in the alternative community or those willing to stray from the narrow path of civilized living at times.

Perhaps this quote from the tattooed president will best serve as an insight into his thoughts on the subject: "There has never been a man in our history who led a life of ease whose name is worth remembering."
