Christine Alsip gives a whole new meaning to Expensive Skin. She's got at least $30,000 worth of artwork in her skin, and has spent over $5,000 traveling to over 35 talented artists from all over the country! She gave us the low down on her life as an InkAddict.
Christine Alsip is a bonafide InkAddict! She got her first tattoo in 2009 and shortly added on to make it larger. After that she waited until 2011 to get another, the bulk of her work was done between 2012 and 2016. After her first tattoo, however, she had no intention of working towards a full bodysuit. “After my first one I discovered I really dislike the healing process and I swore up and down I would never get another. Once I started getting tattooed on the regular it hit me about a year into it that I wanted to be covered.”
A few of her tattoos have meanings behind them but the majority of her tattoos are either imagery or subject matter that she likes. Christine loves cats and skulls so she has a rather large number of both. “I love every tattoo I have on me, but I do have a favorite. It is a Siamese cat and a teacup on the side of my head.” This is one of Christine’s favorites because it is one of the few tattoos of hers with a story behind it. “When I was little some of my favorite times were when my grandparents would stay the night at our house and early in the mornings my grandmother and I would wake up before anyone else and we would spend time doing whatever I wanted to do, as long as she had her cup of tea. She is also the person who sparked my love of cats, she got the family our first which was a Siamese.” This piece was done by Christine's absolute favorite tattooer, Destroy Troy in Ypsilanti.
The two artists that have tattooed Christine the most are Robert Ulman and Brad Tierny. Both artists took the time to really teach her what to look for in composition and quality. This helped her choose artists in the future while looking at their body of work. “While there are many amazing artists out there, the ones who are doing something that speaks to me are the ones I seek out.”
While Christine really kept track of how many hours she’s spent getting tattooed at first she’s since lost track. At this point, she would guess it’s around 500+ hours while being tattooed by 37 different artists. For Christine, the most painful spot was the side of her head while the least painful is a toss up between her outer arm and top of her thigh. She will and has traveled to be tattooed by an artist that she’s interested in. The farthest Christine has gone was 1,000 miles from Altus, OK to Fort Wayne, IN to get tattooed by Dusty Neal and Joel Janiszyn at Black Anvil Tattoo.
Christine doesn’t have much room left but does have plans for a few more. “At this point, I have room for one more tattoo and some filler. My grand finale is going to be the back of my head. I am really over being tattooed and healing them, I am looking forward to being done for good!” Christine plans to travel to tattoo conventions and meet new people. “I love being a part of the tattoo community.”
