If you're a fan of newer styles of rap and hip-hop, (or even if you're not) you've probably noticed a trend with many up-and-coming rappers. We're talking, of course, about face tattoos. Considered one of the most extreme places to get tattooed for apparent reasons; face tattoos are becoming much more prevalent - especially among Soundcloud and "mumble" rappers. We rounded up some of the most extreme face tattoos from the rap scene, as well as what the rappers had to say about them.
Lil Xan's first face tattoo was his mom's name, 'Candy,' at age 18. In an interview with DJ Smallz
he said, "I wanted a face tattoo, and I was like, my mom's gonna kill me, but if it's her name, she might not be too harsh about it." He's gotten a few face tattoos since then but doesn't have many elsewhere.
Lil Skies got a rose on his face as soon as he finalized his mixtape 'Life Of A Dark Rose,' so he could use a photo of the tattoo as the cover art.
Gucci Mane said the inspiration behind his Ice Cream face tattoo is "to say I'm the coldest MC in the game." and the lightning bolt is just to draw more attention to it. Mission accomplished.
Post Malone's "Stay Away" tattoo was born out of sheer rebellion. He says, “I kind of just wanted to, I don’t know, piss my mom off.”
21 Savage is covered in tattoos, some of which have deeper meanings than others. His face, however, is reserved for the most special symbols. "I don't just get a bunch of shit on my face; like everybody else just go put anything on their face. If it's on my face, it's deep."
Rapper Stitches has a message for those who hate on the portraits of his kids on his cheeks. He released a video
explaining his motivation. "Every morning when I wake up, and I look in the mirror, these three human beings on my face are my motivation to become a better person than I was yesterday."
The late lil Peep viewed face tattoos as a form of motivation. In a 2017 GQ Interview
, he stated: "It was kind of like a push for myself to be successful with the music I was doing because It can make it harder to get a job when your face is covered in tattoos."
Love them or hate them, it's like 21 Savage says, "Tattoos are like art. You know how you look at a painting sometimes and it's ugly as hell, but it's still art, so..."
